Users Wary That Free Windows 10 Might Bring Ads
« on: December 30, 2014, 02:29:30 PM »
Ads, Perhaps the most divisive factor in the online world. Microsoft is apparently toying with the idea of a free Windows 10 option for users, but this has created a bit of a panic among users.

Some feel that going this route might open up advertisements on the desktop.

Amazon apparently does this with their Kindle line of tablets, allowing the option of removing ads with a small one-time payment. And although, Redmond has only said that they plan on being creative when it comes to pricing of their next OS, it is no yet clear if Windows 10 will be offered free of charge.

Or at least, one variant of it will be free for users.

Regardless, posts on the Windows UserVoice platform do confirm that some users are indeed afraid of such a thing, and want the operating system to be available as a paid product.

Ads, for these users at least, could ruin the whole experience.

The Start Screen along with a few Modern UI apps are the two likely environments where ads might show up, that is, if Microsoft pursues this strategy. But again, so far there have been no hints of such a scenario, this radical a change in direction.

While Microsoft would surely want to monetize the free Windows platform if it ever happens, ads on the desktop might not really be the best way to go about it.

Keeping a select few features premium-only might probably work better.

Hopefully the upcoming January 21 Microsoft event that is actually focused on consumers should provide more details on not just the new features in development, but more details on how the software titan plans on approaching its new platform.
